It is often easier to not do something dumb than it is to do something smart. Right now, the best answer for nuclear waste is "don't do something dumb". Leave it where it is. In the longer term, a better answer would be to re-process the waste (preferably on-site) as many nuclear facilities in other countries do: most of the "waste" is actually good, usable fuel. It just needs to be separated out from the true waste products. All that aside, though, transporting thousands of tons of high level nuclear waste across the country through populated areas is a Bad Idea.
The BLM is accepting public input until May 8 on a request from Private Fuel Storage that would clear the last barrier to allow them to transport and store high level nuclear waste in Utah.

There's a rally today at noon in the State Office Building auditorium behind the Capitol. Governor Huntsman is hosting the event, and Senator Hatch, Congressman Jim Matheson and Congressman Chris Cannon will be there, along with several local leaders.
