A few months ago I wrote about a task force in Utah County that was considering options for improving our public transportation system.
Today's Deseret News reports that the task force has produced a long-term strategy called Transit Vision 2030, which they unveiled last night during a meeting of the Mountainland Regional Planning Committee. Under the proposal, if it is accepted, local jurisdictions would assume control of bus services beginning in 2008, with the UTA continuing to operate commuter services.
Now that the plan has been presented, the next step is a feasibility study, which may begin as soon as August.
The task force also identified other "transit opportunities" for the county:
- An interim commuter rail service between Provo and Salt Lake, using existing Union Pacific freight tracks
- Funding, authorized by SB8, to identify and acquire additional rights of way for transportation corridors
- An alternative diesel light rail service between Payson and Salt Lake
- Regional bus rapid transit using HOV lanes on I-15
- Local bus rapid transit
