I'm not sure exactly why, but I think I'm going to try out kubuntu, either in Virtual PC or on my old Compaq laptop. I may end up throwing it on one of the old desktops I have around, too. To that end, I downloaded the DVD ISO, but I note that the kubuntu.org mirrors only provide MD5 hashes for CD images, not for the DVD image.
In any case, the ISO matches BitTorrent's checksums, and the on-disc md5sum.txt file checks out, so I assume the download I got is good. In case anyone is interested in hashes for the DVD iso:
