A few interesting items this week:
UtahPolitics reports that XMission, the ISP owned by Senate candidate Pete Ashdown, is now providing free wireless Internet access on Main Street in Salt Lake. Ashdown's comment on UtahPolitics points out that the service "cost the city nothing and was less than a television commercial for XMission." Thanks, Pete!
In today's news, moderate Democrats in the House, including Utah's Jim Matheson, are working on a proposal to impose a 25% tax on internet pornography and require more effective ID checks to ensure that only adults have access. Here's Matheson's press release on the subject. The press release cites a study that indicates that children age 12-17 are the largest group of consumers of Internet pornography. If that's accurate, then better controls are definitely needed, and this proposal may be a good approach. Certainly it's worth a try.
This week also saw the launch of Planet Utah, an aggregation of RSS feeds from several Utah political blogs (including the Politics category here), hosted at UtahPolitics.org.
Finally, this week's podcast (#6, July 29) at Inside Utah includes interviews with Senate candidates Steve Urquhart and Pete Ashdown.
