The news of late is full of stories about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding in New Orleans. The damage, the loss of life and the conditions today are terrible.

I find it somewhat concerning, though, to note how much attention, particularly in the blogging world, is being devoted to assigning blame. Now, that's not to say that everything has been done right all along, or that there isn't blame to be had or room for future improvement. But it seems to me that right now, in the middle of the crisis, is not the best time to be worrying about that. Our attention and efforts at this moment would be better spent in looking for ways to improve the immediate problem. There will be plenty of time for hindsight, evaluation, planning for future improvement, and yes, possibly some sharing of blame, after the emergency is over.

On that note, I was impressed by this link, which Jim Knowlton posted at Beehive Donkey, about IBM's efforts to help out. It's also good to see the number of people who are donating and volunteering through such groups as the Red Cross. Those are the kinds of efforts that can be helpful right now.
