Tonight was the first meeting of the Utah Asterisk User Group. Tonight's meeting was held in Sandy, but given the number of people attending, they will need a larger venue next time. There was some thought of holding the meeting at the Salt Lake City Library in the future, and I believe someone is looking into that. Also, to avoid schedule conflicts with other user groups, future meetings of this group will be on the first Tuesday of each month.

Before the main presentation, there was a short brainstorming session about ideas for future topics. Some that were proposed were:

  • AGI programming
  • Clustering / HA
  • Dialplans
  • Echo
  • Hardware / phones / equipment
  • Presence
  • Service providers
  • Terminology
  • User interfaces

Tonight's main presentation was given by Jared Smith, one of the authors of O'Reilly's Asterisk book and the inventor of IAX trunking. A few notes from the presentation:
Why asterisk? Why now?

  • Flexible and powerful
  • Telephony = next cool thing
    • Analyst prediction: the Linux telephony market in 10 years will be bigger than the entire Linux market today.
  • It's not perfect, but it's good, and it's improving

Why a user group?

  • to share
  • to learn
  • help make Asterisk better

What can Asterisk do for me?

  • Asterisk is a platform, not a product.
  • Finally getting some good GUIs, good documentation, a community, a book :)
  • 3 ways to get a new feature
    • Develop it yourself
    • Pay someone to develop it
    • Convince one of the developers that it's his itch too

What can we do as members of the community?

  • Ask informed questions, in the right places
  • Be quick to say thank you when you get help!
  • Try to become a part of the community
  • Fill out good bug reports, and provide feedback if it's asked for
  • Don't be afraid to suggest new ideas, and don't be discouraged or offended if people don't pick it up
  • Help test new releases
